A gluten-free diet does not necessarily mean a wheat free diet. There are many proteins in wheat and to prevent gluten some of the proteins may be removed through processing. Gluten free labeling has made it easier for you when avoiding gluten and if you are looking to eliminate wheat products from your diet.
A wheat free diet restricts all wheat. If using a gluten free diet as a means to eliminate wheat read the labels to be sure there are no components of wheat added to processed foods. As in a gluten free diet, wheat free leans toward fresh ingredients and avoidance of processed foods.
Grains and Your Heart
Many gluten-free foods eliminated wheat altogether and add other heart-healthy grains such as quinoa, wild rice, oats, rye, and millet. Wheat free diets allow more choices in condiments and sauces than a general gluten free diet. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean meats are naturally gluten and wheat free. Grains found in grocery stores are usually processed along with wheat products and to be used with caution. Finding a local source or natural food store to find pure grain products is essential for both gluten and wheat-free diets.
