Some people choose to cut gluten out of their diets as a way to be healthier while other people have to completely remove gluten from their diet because they suffer from celiac disease. For people just embarking on this journey of becoming gluten free, it can be overwhelming to think about what the best foods for celiac disease may be. At first it might seem like this type of diet is very limiting but in fact, there are still plenty of really tasty foods that you can use to make meals and snacks for yourself and your family. We’ll go over a few in this post.
Best Foods for Celiac Disease
Some people automatically associate grains with gluten, but there are still plenty of grains that can be consumed with a gluten free diet.
Some of these grains include:
- Gluten free oats
Keep in mind that sometimes gluten can be included on a product because of production or cross contamination. While these grains are all safe, you will still want to make sure you know where they are coming from and make sure that they are gluten free.
Fruits And Vegetables
While regular produce is going to be gluten free, there are some other fruit and vegetable based products that you need to make sure are gluten free before consuming them. For example, dried fruit and freeze dried vegetables may contain gluten or be cross contaminated with it. Frozen foods like potatoes may even contain gluten so always read labels before purchasing.
Meat, Poultry And Fish
The best foods for celiacs disease are very simple ingredients that you can use to make your own meals. Meat, poultry and fish fall into this category but still, be careful. Meat that comes packaged and in a marinade could contain gluten. If you want to be extra safe you can now find grass fed meats in your local grocery store rather than grain fed meat.
Most whole foods in their original form are going to be fair game when it comes to the best foods for celiac disease. Fruits, vegetables, lean meats, fish, dairy and some grains are all great ingredients to keep on hand in order to prepare healthy and nutritious meals. A few years ago it was very hard to find products that were gluten free and safe, but luckily, these days there are a number of gluten free brands that are producing tasty, healthy and completely gluten free options.
