When seeking GF sandwich ideas for summer, why not go French with a creamy Monte Cristo sandwich. While there tends to be variations of the Monte Cristo Sandwich, this original grilled cheese sandwich consists of Gruyere cheese and lean ham between two slices of crust-less bread, fried in clarified butter. It was apparently originally served in 1910 in a Paris cafe.
No matter the origin, we’re thrilled to have this version from Amanda Kanashiro of Eat at My Table.
GF Sandwich Ideas – Monte Cristo
This classic sandwich is probably my new favorite. Who doesn’t love a ham and cheese dipped in egg batter and fried in butter. It’s like taking the best lunch has to offer and combining it with breakfast. This is the perfect sandwich for any meal.
Be sure to use thick sliced ham and your favorite cheese. It may be tempting to skip the mustard but don’t. It pairs perfectly with the ham. You will not regret making up one of these gluten free Monte Cristo sandwiches on Three Baker’s newest Large Slice Golden Flax bread!
Ingredients:
- 4 slices Three Baker’s Golden Flax bread
- 4 thick slices ham
- 4 slices cheese of choice (I suggest Havarti or Swiss)
- 1 Tablespoon mayonnaise
- 2 Tablespoon yellow mustard
- 2 eggs
- 2 Tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 3 Tablespoons butter
Directions:
- Spread mayonnaise and mustard on bread.
- Layer cheese and ham.
- Whisk together eggs, milk, and cinnamon.
- Melt butter over medium heat.
- Dip sandwiches in egg mixture.
- Fry in butter for about 3 minutes per side or until golden.
